Chieh Chieng's most indelible childhood memories include reruns of Mobile Suit Gundam, Voltes V, and Gowappa 5 Gōdam (his favorite) on Hong Kong TV, circa 1980. After his family moved to Orange County, California, he developed a love for American comics, toons, and toys. 

A former freelancer for ToyFare, a short story writer and novelist (A Long Stay in a Distant Land, Bloomsbury U.S.), a lecturer in the English Department at UC Irvine, and a lifelong toy fan, Chieh founded Offshoot Toys in June 2025. With the help of artist and toy industry veteran Armando "Mondo" Roque, aka @dreamsofrobots, he hopes to produce figures that blend nostalgia, storytelling and retro vinyl toy design.

Each release helps to tell a larger story about the strange and often fraught goings-on during the legendary War for Pachi'tor, a project that is part 80s love letter, part satire, and part meta-indie toy line.
